We are happy to announce that our Reasearch Fellow Dr. Thomas Daum was awarded the Josef G. Knoll European Science Award 2020 for his work on “The potential of smartphone apps to collect self-recorded data in agricultural households. A study on time-use in Zambia”.

The Josef G. Knoll European Science Award 2020 is awarded for outstanding scientific work which leads to an improvement of the world’s food security. The prize was awarded on September 9, 2020 at the virtual Tropentag. The winners received Euro 10,000 each for their scientific work.

Dr. Thomas Daums development of a smartphone app is a significant contribution, allowing more precise recording of time use and food consumption behavior among poor rural populations. His methods can make a significant contribution to improving databases for research and policymaking, thus being of highest relevance for farmers’ livelihoods and their food security.

Congratulations, Thomas!
