The literature review, presented at Tropentag Conference on September 18-21, 2016 in Vienna, aimed to analyze scientific evidence regarding the impacts of private sector investments on smallholders along the agricultural value chain.

The study finds a strong research focus on the production level and identifies severe research gaps on other levels of the value chain. Research must diminish the production focus and recognize entrepreneurial capabilities of farmers n order to strengthen their role in rural development, the study concludes.
